What Did We Think of the Thursosurf Max Multi-Purpose Inflatable SUP?
We found that the Thurso Surf Max delivers exactly what it promises on the packaging: an incredibly stable, versatile platform that acts like the “SUV of stand-up paddleboards.” If you want an inflatable SUP that won’t budge when a massive dog hops on, or if you need to load up over 300 lbs of multi-day gear, this is one of your absolute best options on the market.
Where the Max loses a few points is in its pure speed performance. Because it is a massive 34 inches wide with a broad, square tail, it pushes a ton of water. It takes noticeably more energy to maintain a fast clip compared to a dedicated touring layout like the Expedition 150. However, for fishing, family fun, or SUP yoga, the trade-off is well worth it.
The onboard features are premium—featuring a full-length stamped EVA traction deck pad, twin side paddle holders, multiple threaded action mounts, and a highly configurable multi-strap bungee system.

- Premium Woven Drop-Stitch Construction: Uses a cross-woven fabric core and heat-welded seams, cutting down the raw weight of a board this large to a manageable 25.6 lbs.
- Dual Side Paddle Holders: Two robust Velcro straps on the rails securely lock down your paddle when you are anchoring down to fish or floating with friends. I always appreciate when SUP companies include these.
- Upgraded Accessory Package: Includes a light 3-piece carbon hybrid paddle, a rechargeable electric pump that saves your arms, and a smooth-rolling wheel backpack.
Cons
- Slow Top-End Speed: The drag created by the wide profile makes high-velocity tracking or long-distance racing exhausting.
- No Specialized Fishing Mounts: While it has multiple threaded action mounts, there are no factory-installed Scotty or Railblaza mounts built natively into the frame. Still you can get fishing rod holders from the Thursosurf Shop.
Who Should Be Using the Thursosurf Max?
Unlike specialized touring boards, the Max is explicitly built for beginners, larger riders, and multi-passenger paddlers. If you are a larger individual (up to 370 lbs max capacity) who has historically felt unstable or “wobbly” on entry-level 31-inch or 32-inch all-around boards, the Max provides immediate, confidence-inspiring balance.
It is also an elite pick for families who want to paddle tandem with their kids or dog owners whose furry companions love to shift around on deck.
What Activities Can the Thursosurf Max Be Used For
Being a Multi purpose board the Max Multi Purpose SUP can be used for most things stability oriented including the following.
Family / Pet Cruising
Broad tail and full-grip pad handle wandering paws or shifting toddlers effortlessly. The large deck pad also helps give grip to those SUP pets who may go overboard trying to stay on the PVC surface.
SUP Yoga & Fitness
Flat, expansive, and stable surface handles advanced poses without tipping. This is a great pick for taller/ bigger SUP Yogi’s who may be too big for 10’6” all-around SUPs.
SUP Fishing
High capacity allows heavy coolers, tackle boxes, and crates to sit securely onboard. While it does not have things like rod holders or fishing mounts it is still a solid board for the DYI fisherman. The long length and wider width gives you a lot more confidence casting, even if you are taller or heavier by nature.

Stability
This is where the Max earns its name. The board measures a massive 34 inches across (often closer to 34.75 inches when fully inflated to its recommended 12-15 PSI). Because it uses a wide, square-shaped tail block instead of a tapered pin-tail, that volume is distributed evenly across the entire surface. Standing up from your knees feels effortless, making it arguably one of the more stable standalone platforms available today.
This is especially a great pick for those bigger or taller guys or gals who have trouble with an 10’6 All Around board. It is one of the most stable single person SUP’s in the Thursosurf catalog.
Tracking
The Max utilizes a 2+1 removable Quick-Lock fin setup (one large 9-inch center fin and two 4.5-inch side-bites). When running all three fins simultaneously, tracking is surprisingly straight for an all-around shape, keeping a true line across roughly 6.5 strokes per side (7 on the left and 6 on the right) before requiring correcting.
Maneuverability
Maneuverability is equally strong because the board responds fairly quickly to pivot and sweep strokes due to its 11’6″ frame, letting you complete a reverse 360-degree sweep in roughly 4 deliberate strokes which was actually a very good score for a SUP of it’s dimensions! It may even be the best score from all of our 11’6 SUPs!
The board did 13 reverse side paddles for a 360 which is not a bad score for a 11’6 long SUP!
Speed
Speed is the compromise. While its pointed nose slices through light chop reasonably well, the wider width means you will feel a distinct wall of resistance if you try to sprint or gun it at a high cadence. Having said that, after testing the board out I did find that the stability of the board really helps you dig into your strokes more so than other boards which can help you go that extra bit faster.

Inside the core, the board features Woven Drop-Stitch technology. Instead of traditional knitted drop-stitch setups that run vertically up and down, the internal polyester threads are cross-woven in an “X” pattern. The outer shell uses a mechanically laminated double-layer fusion PVC. Mechanical heat lamination eliminates the structural variances and weight additions of traditional manual gluing processes.
The structural rails feature heat-welded rails rather than glued joints. Welding literally fuses the top and bottom layers into a singular component, drastically cutting down the risk of seam blowouts over multi-year use.

On-Deck Storage & Layout
The board layout is highly optimized for versatility. Up front, you’ll find a massive 6-point bungee system equipped with adjustable tension cords—ideal for securing large dry bags or a standard 24-can cooler.
The rear storage zone features a smaller 4-point configuration designed to hold secondary gear like water shoes, coolers, or anchor kits out of your standing path.
Action Mounts and Camera Mount
Thurso includes four separate threaded action mounts distributed across the perimeter of the deck. These points accommodate standard 1/4″-20 threaded accessories, making it simple to secure phone holders, waterproof Bluetooth speakers, fishing rod extensions. It also features and action mount at the front of the nose of the board for go-pro cameras to document the journey as you paddle.
The deck also features four steel D-rings arranged around the standing area, providing a solid anchor framework if you choose to install an aftermarket kayak conversion seat.
Twin Paddle Holders
A standout quality-of-life feature on the Max is the inclusion of dual side paddle holders. Two sets of reinforced Velcro straps are built right along the outer rails. When you need to drop anchor to fish, flow through a yoga sequence, or take a swimming break, you can securely strap your paddle flush against the side of the board so it doesn’t float away.
I really like using these when I’m parking the SUP up and hanging out either sharing snacks or listening to music with friends.

Thurso Surf ships the Max as a fully integrated, premium kit, avoiding the cheap throw-away components common in entry-level packages.
3-Piece Carbon Hybrid Paddle:
Features a genuine carbon fiber shaft paired with a tough nylon blade. It adjusts easily from 68 to 84 inches. The carbon construction minimizes swing weight, which reduces shoulder fatigue over extended sessions. This is one of the better paddles that come with mid tier SUP packages. Thursosurf definitely did not cheap out on this one
Rechargeable Electric Air Pump:
A massive value addition to the kit! And if you know me you know how much I hate manual pumps! While I’m typically not a huge upsell reviewer, I do often recommend people get electric pumps for convenience and saving your strength for the paddle. Especially when it’s a hot day!
The electric pump includes an integrated battery pack, letting you inflate your board right at the water’s edge without staying tied to a 12V car lighter plug. It fills the high-volume Max to 15 PSI in about 9 to 11 minutes with zero muscle strain.
Quick-Lock Tri-Fin System
The fin layout features one 9-inch center fin and two 4.5-inch side-bites. They utilize a toolless snap-lock system that clicks into place in seconds. Running the full tri-fin configuration maximizes tracking stability for this wide shape.
While I do like the snap lock system of the center fin. The side fins can be a bit of a pain and can be time consuming to install. You need to use the small Alan key that comes with the package to secure the fins in. It takes a bit of getting used to but after some time fiddling around with it you get the hang of it.
Wheeled Roller Backpack
A heavy-duty storage pack that unzips completely across three sides for hassle-free packing. It features padded backpack straps for short carries, alongside integrated rugged wheels that allow you to roll the full 36-pound kit across docks and parking areas easily.
The good news is the bag is nice and baggy and can fit everything in. The bad news is, well, the same thing, which makes the contents inside the bag move around quite a bit when rolling it. Thankfully, there are straps inside the bag that can hold the contents into place.
I do wish the straps were bigger and had more padding, similar to the Nixy and Irocker Bags.

The Thursosurf Max is pretty easy to set-up and take down thanks to its electric pump. Simply unroll the board, take all the packaging off, plug the electric pump in and inflate the board! Whenever the board inflates is when I like to put together the accessories onboard to save some time. Luckily Thursosurf offers a great little accessories pouch where you can store everything from fins to leashes. I find this pouch super handy for storing contents neatly. The pouch have a bunch of different sized compartments for things such as the fins, tools, instructions, and the leash.
When you get back, one of the best things you can do (besides drying the board and rinsing it) is to deflate the board using the electric pump. Yes, it’s an extra step; however, this will greatly help in making the board more foldable. Make sure you start from the nose and work your way down, folding the board. It may take a few times, but you want to make sure the fin housing lies flat on the fold and not on the edges.
Final Verdict: Is the Thursosurf Max Worth It?
If your priority is high speed, long-distance racing, or aggressive ocean touring, you should look toward the sleeker Thurso Expedition line.
However, if you want an incredibly stable multi-purpose platform built to handle heavy payloads, family outings, calm-water fishing, or pet companionship without compromising on premium construction materials, the Thursosurf Max Multi-Purpose SUP stands out as an elite choice in its class.
